COACH, why don't I play more?!

Great stuff from Rhode Island College men's basketball coach Bob Walsh!

WHY DON’T I PLAY MORE?
TAKE AN HONEST LOOK AT YOURSELF
  • ARE YOU PRODUCTIVE?  IN PRACTICE?  IN GAMES?
  • DO YOU DEFEND HARD ON EVERY POSSESSION?
  • DO YOU COMPETE ON THE GLASS?
  • DO YOU DO THE SIMPLE THINGS – SCREEN, HELPSIDE DEFENSE, DIVE ON THE FLOOR, TAKE CHARGES, GET THROUGH SCREENS – THAT HELP US WIN GAMES?
  • DO YOU COMPETE EVERY DAY IN PRACTICE?
  • DO YOU MAKE YOUR TEAMMATES BETTER?
  • ARE YOU WILLING TO SACRIFICE YOUR INDIVIDUAL GOALS FOR THE TEAM?
  • CAN YOU HELP THE TEAM MORE THAN THE PERSON IN FRONT OF YOU?  HAVE YOU PROVEN THAT EVERY DAY?
  • DO YOU TAKE CARE OF EVERYTHING OFF THE COURT SO WE CAN TRUST YOU?
  • HAVE YOU PROVEN WE CAN COUNT ON YOU IN THE CLASSROOM?
  • DO YOU TRUST ME?  DO YOU TRUST YOUR TEAMMATES?
  • DO YOU WORK AS HARD AS YOU CAN ALL OF THE TIME?  WEIGHT ROOM?  CONDITIONING?
  • DO YOU REPRESENT THIS SCHOOL AND THIS PROGRAM WELL?
  • CAN YOU RECOGNIZE YOUR WEAKNESSES AS A PLAYER?
  • DO YOU KNOW ALL OF THE PLAYS?
  • ARE YOU COACHABLE?
  • DO YOU ACCEPT CRITICISM THAT IS MEANT TO HELP YOU GET BETTER?
  • ARE YOU ALWAYS ON TIME?
  • DO YOU HANDLE YOURSELF WELL WHEN THINGS DON’T GO YOUR WAY?
  • DO YOU HANDLE YOURSELF WELL WHEN THINGS DO GO YOUR WAY?
  • ARE YOU HONEST WITH THE COACHING STAFF?
  • ARE YOU HONEST WITH YOURSELF ABOUT YOUR ABILITY AS A PLAYER?
  • ARE YOU LOYAL TO THE COACHING STAFF AND YOUR TEAMMATES?
  • DO YOU TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF PHYSICALLY OFF THE COURT?
  • ARE YOU SUPPORTIVE OF THE PEOPLE PLAYING IN FRONT OF YOU?
  • ARE YOU BETTER THAN YOU WERE 6 MONTHS AGO?
  • WILL YOU DO WHATEVER IS ASKED OF YOU TO HELP THE TEAM WIN?
  • IS WINNING REALLY THE MOST IMPORTANT GOAL FOR YOU?
  • ARE YOU A GOOD TEAMMATE?
ANSWER THESE QUESTIONS HONESTLY.  THEN COME SEE ME.

  1. Great share Chris. Especially love the note "Do you compete every day in practice?" Beyond just practice, do you take that mentality to every part of your life - competing against yourself, complacency, and for the goals you wish to accomplish. Keep up the good work!
